Having trouble with your indoor mobile phone signal? We’ve put together five things that could be leading to a poor mobile reception in your home and what you can do to resolve this.
1) Distance from the tower
If you are in a vehicle and have driven further from the tower or if you have moved to a location that puts you out of signal reach, then you are likely to experience dropped mobile calls and poor mobile phone reception. The solution is to purchase a repeater which helps pick up your weak far away signal and boost it.
2) Trees(especially in summer with the leaves), hills.
Trees can be a barrier to a good signal especially in summer because of leaves. Trimming down the trees is one solution, but this can be costly and permission is usually required first. The most viable option is a repeater which amplifies your weak indoor mobile phone signal and works well throughout the year. Also if you have a hill as a barrier, then it’s likely that a repeater is the best option.
3)Walls(brick is bad, aluminium backed insulation even worse), k-glass windows)
Walls are especially problematic for mobile signals – especially brick walls. They are one of the biggest problems to mobile phone users especially in built up areas. A repeater receives the signal “outside” your house so works particularly well in this case.
4) Small mobile phone antenna(bad radiator)
A small mobile phone antenna may allow you to carry your phone around and will provide a little boost to your signal. However, they are not powerful enough to provide a strong signal in many environments like remote locations and even in the home, behind a wall. A repeater on the other hand, uses a high gain outdoor antenna on the roof and this is far more powerful than a little mobile phone antenna. 5)Too many users on the same mast/tower(congestion mainly happens in cities on the 3g network)
Mobile phone congestion is a problem mainly in cities and the obvious reason is the high number of people using the same tower. A repeater will search several mobile towers and if the nearest one is congested and an operator will push your phone to the next tower which is less congested. Your mobile phone would normally not have the power to see the local tower. Read about how to boost your mobile signal in your house here.
